Italian Alps Villa 8

The newly renovated Chalet Alta Badia is a lovely and comfortable property in San Cassiano (1537 meters/5043 ft. above sea level). San Cassiano is a small, Ladin speaking town with the charm of a typical Dolomite mountain village with a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. The pedestrian area is full of restaurants and shops and is perfect for relaxing after a day on the hiking paths or ski slopes.

Walks along the Armentarola valley, or cross country skiing in the winter, with its Alta Badia cross country skiing centre, provide breath-taking views of the spectacular sunsets which tinge the Dolomites with pink.

The Val Badia is a center of the Ladin culture and is virtually totaly tri lingual; Ladin, Italian and German. The cultural enviornment is most unique and a joy to experience, offering up some of the best qualities of mountain, Italian and Teutonic cultural. Among the areas main activities are: the larch forest trail, the Klaus and Dorothea von der Flühe meditation walk, the First World War in the Dolomites sites at Mount Lagazuoi and Mount Störes, the "Trù liösa Foram" sledging slope from Piz Sorega to San Cassiano, the Alta Badia - Armentarola cross country skiing center, and, of course, eating, as is witnessed by the unbelievable amount of great restaurants in the area. There are over 16 michelin stars in the area, one of the highest concentrations in the world.

The Chalet Alta Badia is an old farmhouse dating to the late nineteenth century that has always belonged to the same family and it was one of the first houses in the village of San Cassiano, a little gem of Alta Badia, surrounded by the enchanting Dolomites. The Villa "speaks" the language of the territory, this is not only due to the family’s name of Ladin origin but for its architecture, which is reminiscent of the most popular traditional architectural style of the valley.

The restoration was conducted in full respect of the villa’s original style and was completed in 2012. The work was assigned to professionals and workers with a deep knowledge of Ladina architecture.

Chalet Alta Badia offers to its guests all comforts and modern facilities as a perfet home away from home retreat in the Italian Alps, always in perfect harmony with the typical family warmth of the farm. the villa features a selection of hand picked materials: such as larch wood from old barns used for the exterior, brushed and waxed pine together with "Luserna" and "Piasentina" stone for the interior, and vintage planed oak for floors. With the same care the fabrics were selected for fthe urniture, from Loden to raw silk, from cotton to linen. A careful attention to the environmental impact has been also considered, from structural characteristics which optimize energy consumption and ensure maximum energy savings, to the overall aesthetics of the Villa, which is harmoniously blending into Dolomites landscape.

Recommended Local Restaurants

This small mountain valley hosts some of the leading restaurants in Italy. There are three Michelin starred restaurants within 10 minutes of the villa, and an additional three within 45 minutes. Our suggestions here just include restaurants in the valley, all within 15 minutes.

St. Hubertus-Strada Micura de Rue 20, 39030 SAN CASSIANO Tel +390471849500 Located just three minutes from the villa. Rated Two Michelin Stars. This restaurant has an elegant and majestic feel inspired by the noble stag, which is such a feature in the decor. It boasts a profusion of wood adding a modern feel to its traditional Tyrolean style. Chef Niederkofler, known to all as Norbert, "cooks the mountains" (to use his expression). He brings a whole host of fine Alpine ingredients to the table, as showcased in sophisticated dishes that are full of colour and flavour. Expensive

Fondue Stube-Strada Micura de Rue 20, 39030 SAN CASSIANO Tel +390471849500 Located in the Hotel Rosalpina, just three minutes feom the villa. Something a little different, Cheese and meat fondue servred in a characteristic Stube with very few tables. A perfect family style dinner after a day on the ski slopes or after having been hiking in the middle of the beautiful Dolomites. Moderate prices.

La Siriola-via Pre de Vi 31, 39030 SAN CASSIANO Tel +390471849445 Also in San Cassiano, only a few minutes drive from the villa. If you feel like a break from traditional Alpine decor, then you will enjoy the bright modern ambience of La Siriola. Although the menu does feature some local specialities, the cuisine is generally varied and imaginative with a use of recipes and produce from all over Italy and further afield. A great success! Expensive

La Stüa de Michil-Strada Col Alt 105, 39033 CORVARA IN BADIA Tel +390471831000üa-de-michil/167-58491.html A couple villages up the valley, it would be no exaggeration to describe this Michelin One Star restaurant as one of the most romantic in Italy - the traditional wood furnishings add a charming, intimate feel to the Stube-style dining rooms. Although the menu focuses on Alpine produce, it also offers dishes from elsewhere in Italy, including fish and seafood. One of the greates wine lists in Italy. Expensive.

La Gana-strada Verda 3, 39030 La Villa Tel +390471847762 A 10 minute drive from the villa, this intimate, elegant restaurant serves a selection of local game that is flavoured with delicacies from the nearby woods. Stria-via Val 18, 39033 COLFOSCO Tel +390471836620 A couple villages up the valley, an excellent address for anyone looking for substance rather than frills and ceremony. Two simple dining rooms serve as the backdrop for high quality cuisine that is creative, often elegantly presented and always full of flavor. Moderate prices.

Stüa dla Lâ-Via Runcac 29, località Pedraces, 39036 PedracesTel +390471839718 Ten minutes from the villa. The Ladin name of this restaurant refers to the 19C wood-adorned room where the grandmother of the family once lived. Today it is occupied by her young, friendly grandson who has come home to run the restaurant. He serves excellent cuisine that recalls local traditions, recipes from his childhood and the local woods, all reinterpreted with a distinctly modern flavour. Rated Two Forks by Italian restaurant guide, Gambero Rosso. Moderate prices

Maso Runch-Via Runch 11, località Pedraces, 39036 Pedraces Tel +390471839796 Arround 15 minutes from the villa and surrounded by woods, this 18 Century farmhouse is part of an "agri-turismo" and home to five different Stube-style dining rooms.
